Yes HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A PTA OR OTHER SCHOOL COMMITTEES? Yes, School Fair, Founders Day committee chair. Marching band Uniform committee, School Picture chair, Bardonia PTA Secretary, Treasure of Clarkstown Council of PTA''s, Founders Day Chair. of PTA Council. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR DISTRICT IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? All students need to feel safe and their opinions need to be heard and respected. We must work to resolve the divide in the Clarkstown School District by involving the community and stakeholders in the solution. Issues which are areas of discourse must be presented and discussed by the community and stakeholders prior to the BOE voting on a policy. We must listen to parents and students. Working together to gather data about the success of our reading. writing, phonics and new math program. Gathering data will help the BOE determine the efficacy of these vital programs. Many of our buildings in Clarkstown are 50 to 60 years old. Much of the infrastructure is the original. Therefore, it is no longer possible to get parts to repair things like ventilators, doors, windows and many other parts of the building structure. We need to develop a plan for replacement to better secure and protect our students. Accept that more of our students will have additional academic needs due to the pandemic and an increase in new students educated in other situations. Having the staff to provide for the additional students and our own students is a priority. Palisades Mall continues to be an ongoing concern for our district. The owners of the mall have a lawsuit against the Town of Clarkstown and the School district. A huge concern is that the owners of the mall have closed other malls when they could not come to an agreement with the local governments. If this were to happen Clarkstown taxes would increase significantly. As a district we need to work with the town to find another use for the property that would generate a tax base. IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST/FOCUS BE? WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH? Bringing a very divided community together. Let teacher teach and not have to worry about outside political issues. Our teachers are outstanding, and they need to be able to focus on what they do best. Work with the district to improve the infrastructure of our buildings. Become serious about meeting the needs of every student. The evaluation of our academic programs using a data- based process. Providing enough staff to help students who need additional support. Maintaining a strong academic program which includes AP. IB and the prerequisite subjects to support a rigorous program for all students. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDACY? I have an extensive background in education and leadership as Department Chair. of School Counseling (Guidance) for 20 years at FFMS, President of Clarkstown School Board 3 years and president of the Rockland County School Board Association for 2 years. Chairperson of the Crisis Team after 9/11 and for 13 years. Problem solving has always been something I focused on. One of my responsibilities as a BOE member has been the legislative delegate. I am also the legislative delegate from the Rockland County School Board Association to the Lower Hudson Educational Council. The LHEC advocates with our legislators regarding educational issues on the floor in Albany, I report on this at every board meeting in order to keep parents informed. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Musical Director, Stage Lighting and design, Gardening, making 72 quarts of Bread and Butter pickles every summer and Kayaking on Lake Mombasha. WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? Before I was married, taught and worked weekends in TV production on the road. I am deaf in one ear due to a very serious illness at 4 years old. WHAT ARE SOME PERSONALITY TRAITS THAT WOULD MAKE YOU A GREAT BOARD MEMBER? Very caring, openness, excellent communication skills, depth of knowledge, a superb listener and conscientious.
Irene Tagaris DO YOU LIVE IN THE CLARKSTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT? Yes WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION? Teacher/Professor(Retired) DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN/GRANDCHILDREN/FAMILY IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? Yes HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A PTA OR OTHER SCHOOL COMMITTEES? Yes, Strawtown PTA and South HS PTSA HAVE YOU HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION? NYCBOE teacher, Hunter College (Adjunct Professor), CCSD BOE (2 terms) IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR DISTRICT IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? Foundation Aid - we need to have a more accurate assessment for funding. Every year it’s always a worry of what the final number will be and how that number will affect our community and taxes. Foundation Aid is the only other source of money/funds coming into the district besides taxes from our community. If our Foundation aid in any way has significant changes it could affect everything from teaching staff to the academic programs we have in CCSD. I have been part of meetings every year (all six years) with legislators, senators and congressmen to discuss how to fix Foundation aid and to make sure that CCSD is represented as a district whose Foundation Aid is not being calculated correctly. Finally, this year the governor is creating a committee to review Foundation Aid formula.
Facilities - our buildings need to be updated. Not just the normal things like floors, windows, or outside needs but classrooms, science rooms, etc… We need to make our buildings up to date with technology, resources, maker spaces, team building rooms, anything that will add to creating a better learning environment and permit our students to challenge themselves. My goal is to continue pushing for programs and creating those types of spaces for our students. It’s slow, but hopefully with our new grant writer we will receive additional funding to start making those types of facilities updates.
Teacher/Staff shortages - many college students aren't going into the education profession and finding qualified people has become extremely difficult every year, especially on the high school and middle school levels (the sciences are the hardest to fill). This is another area that I have spoken about and voiced my concern during my webinars with NYSED and NYSSBA of how to encourage/inspire people back into the education profession. IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST/FOCUS BE? WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH? My goal as a Board member has always been academics and making sure we have programs where every student has the ability to find their educational path while at CCSD. I am a huge proponent of CTEC/PTECH programs because career paths do not always lead to college. But, I am also focused on dual enrollment with colleges for students that are ready for a more challenging educational path while still in high school. It's all about the opportunities that CCSD can offer students academically while they are trying to figure out "what do I want to be when I grow up." For me, it's constantly looking to see what else we can add or do to enrich our academic/educational programs at CCSD.
The way students learn has changed and CCSD needs to embrace the new way of learning and teaching because students are much more knowledgeable due to technology and having resources at their fingertips with their computers. AI is here and CCSD needs to plan and prepare how AI will be integrated and implemented during classroom instruction and even how students will be utilizing AI in the work they produce. I have been part of webinars given by NYSSBA and RCSBA about AI and the role AI will play in education going forward. There is also a policy that will be created for AI in education, hopefully in the upcoming school year, but first a committee needs to be created to discuss how this will be implemented at CCSD. Another area of interest has always been the IB program that we have at Link. It is a wonderful program that should be in all elementary schools. This program allows a students to work not only independently on projects but in groups as well. It gives students an opportunity to explore learning in a different type of classroom environment where they are the teacher not only for themselves but for fellow students, it allows more ownership of what they are learning. I feel the autonomy of learning gives them confidence and when they present what they have learned, it is amazing to see how much they have to share about the topic being presented. Hoping this term, I will see IB in all elementary schools. My suggestion has been to have an IB cohort for FFMS that would then branch into both high schools. This would be for students who would like to continue in an IB classroom environment and receive and IB diploma at graduation from high school. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDACY? Besides having an educational background and continuing to further my education as a board member through professional development, I bring a tremendous amount of knowledge to the district because I am constantly looking for innovative and progressive programs for our students. My goal is to bring more opportunities for students to explore while at CCSD and have the ability to develop interest in areas they may have thought was not for them. I believe in creating a supportive and nurturing environment where students can blossom. I am big advocate for our staff and strive to creat a school community where we all are working toward the same goal of making CCSD #1. For me, it's always what else can we do for the students, what other program can we bring in, what can we do to improve in that area so our students are more successful, or why don't we have this in our district yet? WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Gardening, flowers and growing my own vegetables. I disappear into my garden from May all the way into late October. Reading, there is never enough time for reading, but gardening and reading go very well together. Hiking, nothing better then being out in nature. WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I loved to collect stamps when I was younger, wish I haddened stopped. My father worked for a bank as a custodian and he brought me stamps from all over the world. They were absolutely beautiful. I came to the states when I was five years old with my parents and my younger brother. WHAT ARE SOME PERSONALITY TRAITS THAT WOULD MAKE YOU A GREAT BOARD MEMBER? Honest, Fair, Appreciative, Insightful, Caring, Knowledgeable, Integrity, Loyalty, and Sincerity

Yes HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A PTA OR OTHER SCHOOL COMMITTEES? No HAVE YOU HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION? Yes, as a teacher, administrator IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR DISTRICT IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? Focusing on politics over education, poor management of funds, lack of adequate special needs/ gifted programs, teacher/ assistant retention IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST/FOCUS BE? WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH?Improve school community, accountability, educational programs. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDACY? Dana Gropper DO YOU LIVE IN THE CLARKSTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT? Yes WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION? Technology Integration Specialist (Teacher on Special Assignment) DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN/GRANDCHILDREN/FAMILY IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? No HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A PTA OR OTHER SCHOOL COMMITTEES? Yes. School Technology Committees, Smart Schools Bond Committee, School Curriculum Committees, STEAM Fair Committees HAVE YOU HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION? Yes. My professional life and passion for working with kids started simply as being a babysitter in my young teens. I have worked as a camp counselor, helped run a “counselors in training” program, wrote tons of curriculum when I worked as a Site Director overseeing three sites of academically/common core aligned enrichment programming in Providence, RI, and then made my way back to New York to teach as a Special Education teacher for the NYCDOE. My current role as a Technology Integration Specialist at Orange-Ulster BOCES is multi-fold. When it comes to the classroom, I make sure that teachers know/learn how to use their technology as a tool and teach best practices to facilitate in a 21st century classroom. I also work to help students understand the importance of technology tools and access, and teach students that technology can be used for more than fun and games. Beyond the classroom, I assist with making budgetary decisions for the district in regards to technology tools (both hardware and software), as well as make recommendations to school and district admins as to what “the district needs” in order to enhance current practices. Additionally, I am certified to be a school district or building administrator and constantly involved in conversations relating to EdLaw and NYSED mandates, but I love what I do too much to 100% leave the classroom. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR DISTRICT IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? Clarkstown is navigating through a complex array of challenges that impact our educational landscape. These include fostering a positive community atmosphere, addressing the educational setbacks experienced by students following the COVID-19 pandemic, managing the scarcity of support staff, and ensuring the overall well-being of our educational community. Each of these issues requires thoughtful attention and action to maintain and enhance the quality of education we provide. IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST/FOCUS BE? WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH?The challenges I expect to face in the previous question are my focus over the next few years. To start, my approach would be to foster unity through active listening and open dialogue. Addressing learning loss and wellness requires a united front; we need to re-evaluate our educational practices to alleviate burnout among teachers and students alike. To combat these issues, I propose: -Implementing better onboarding systems for educational materials. ---Making sure we are choosing successful, evidence based curriculums ---Using our teachers to give us reliable insight on which programs may or may not work in their classroom and why -Ensuring fairness across all (elementary) schools. ---So that all K-5 children are having similar experiences in all of our elementary schools. -Providing targeted professional development. ---For example, CCSD has already adopted technology tools that can allow us to easily personalize instruction specifically to every students’ needs, however, the district is not implementing with fidelity and therefore teachers have not been trained on how to use these tools with fidelity. -Creating an environment where teachers can thrive without feeling overwhelmed. -More mental health counselors in the district to assist with the significant need. -Looking to local colleges and universities in attempts to setup partnerships to fill our support staff gaps with students studying education. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDACY? As a candidate for the Board of Education, my campaign is built on a foundation of service, inclusivity, and a commitment to the continuous improvement of the Clarkstown Central School District. My candidacy is driven by a deep empathy that allows me to connect with the community on a personal level, ensuring that everyone's voice is heard and valued. With a strong passion for education, I am dedicated to advocating for the highest quality of learning for all students. My professional experience has honed my communication skills, enabling me to effectively collaborate with stakeholders and synthesize diverse perspectives into informed decisions. My strategic vision for the district is informed by thorough research and a clear understanding of the broader educational landscape. By supporting my candidacy, we can work together to foster a thriving educational environment for the students of Clarkstown. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? Regularly practice yoga Stand Up Paddle (almost) daily throughout the summer (usually with my favorite riding partner…my pup, Charlie) Bringing “my fun work” home and other tech projects (building websites, playing with robots, just anything else to enhance my skills and passion in the technology/EdTech world) Reading Going to live music performances WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I used to work in the marine industry as a buyer for privately owned mega yachts. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with various EdTech companies, providing them with insights and feedback from my perspective as an educator. Among these, SMART Tech, known for their SMART Boards, stands out as my favorite. It’s been a rewarding experience, especially having the opportunity to name one of their monster mascots and seeing them bring my actual ideas to life through their innovative tools. I have completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, complemented by 50 hours of specialized training in Yin Yoga and an additional 50 hours in Neurosculpting Meditation. I bought the house I grew up in. WHAT ARE SOME PERSONALITY TRAITS THAT WOULD MAKE YOU A GREAT BOARD MEMBER? I’m empathetic to a fault. I’m beyond passionate about education. I’m an extremely good listener. Thoughtful Dedicated to the students, families, educators and all other stakeholders in CCSD. Out of the box thinker. Collaborator
Jason Bass DO YOU LIVE IN THE CLARKSTOWN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT? YES WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT OCCUPATION? Lieutenant in the NYPD DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN/GRANDCHILDREN/FAMILY IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT? YES HAVE YOU HAD EXPERIENCE WORKING IN A PTA OR OTHER SCHOOL COMMITTEES? No
HAVE YOU HAD PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION? Yes. Ran the Field Training Unit Program (FTU) for my Police Command for several years before taking over as Platoon Commander IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR DISTRICT IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS? I feel the biggest challenges are retaining and recruiting the best educators as well keeping up with the latest advancements in education while not putting an unnecessary burden on the taxpayers. IF ELECTED, WHAT WILL YOUR AREAS OF INTEREST/FOCUS BE? WHAT DO YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH? I would like to see our TV production program expanded. I would like to see an Ultimate Frisbee Team formed at the middle school level and I would like to see us incorporate life skills into our curriculum. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDACY? I bring the view from an outsider. We rely on people who are so accustomed to a specific way or manner of operating that everything gets replicated, and this leads to stagnation. Any time an organization says "this is how it has always been done" is limiting itself and cutting off growth. With a fresh perspective we can return Clarkstown to the peak of the educational system in NY state. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I enjoy playing with my two boys and cooking for my family. WHAT ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? People would be surprised to know that I enjoy learning history.
